About this blog

Powerful forces of change have impacted on everyone and all business in the 21st Century, creating uncertainties, risks, threats and opportunities. Witness the disruption caused by digital technology, the rise of cyber crime, turmoil in the financial markets on a scale never previously experienced, concern about fossil fuels, climate change and environmental destruction and trade wars.

As a businessman, I need to understand the impact on my company that the dynamism and dangers in the environment may create. I cannot be an expert in each but, to the extent that they have a fundamental impact on my business, I need to understand the driving forces, the opportunities they offer and the impact on my business. We are all as much a product of the environment in which we live as of our own abilities and aspirations.

Many stories are written about managers of corporations, entrepreneurs, or gifted innovators, about their outstanding successes or perhaps dramatic failures. However, the numbers of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in our economy far outweighs these individuals and less is heard about how they face the uncertainties, risks, threats and opportunities inherent in an unpredictable world.

I identify the issues I have experienced in establishing and running an SME and explain how I have dealt with them. But, as Marcel Proust once said: “The only true voyage would be not to travel through a hundred different lands with the same pair of eyes, but to see the same land through a hundred different pairs of eyes.”

With that in mind, this blog also features a collection of interviews with a selection of leaders of SMEs, people from a diverse range of industries and activities who have skin in the game to learn of their experiences and their solutions to the issues they have faced.

I hope you enjoy the voyage.
